Where to find Smithing Stones
Smithing Stones come in a range of qualities, starting at Smithing Stone [1] and increasing up to Smithing Stone [9]. For those just starting out, you will no doubt run into some troubles sourcing the first three levels of Smithing Stones. Below you’ll find the locations of several stones, but I’ve separated them into early and late game locations.
The main tip is to search the map for orange circles with a black center, these are mines. Within these mines are strong enemies, but more importantly, plenty of Smithing Stones of a set quality.
Smithing Stone [1]
At the start of the game, you will need to find a lot of Smithing Stone [1]s to increase your weapon up to +5. You can find about 10 Smithing Stone [1]s in the Limgrave Tunnels. These tunnels are found just north of the large body of water.
Smithing Stone [1] can also be purchased from the Twin Maiden Husks at the Roundtable Hold after giving them the Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing [1]. This Bell Bearing is dropped by the Crystalian boss in the Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel. This mine can be seen on the map below under Smithing Stone [3].
Smithing Stone [2]
As for Smithing Stone [2], that one you will come across over time as you're progressing, specifically as you’re moving through Stormveil Castle. This is the main area where you will find plenty of the stones. Loot every single body you find, especially those along the rooftops.
Smithing Stone [2] can also be purchased from the Twin Maiden Husks at the Roundtable Hold after giving them the Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing [1]. As mentioned above, this is dropped by the boss in the Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel.
Smithing Stone [3]
The next hurdle will be Smithing Stone [3]. These can be found in abundance in the Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel in Liurnia of the Lakes, the area after you defeat Godrick in Limgave. Alternatively, you can circumvent the encounters in Stormveil Castle and instead make your way to the lake area early. You can do this by trekking around the eastern side of the castle, along obscure path.
Smithing Stone [3] can be purchased from the Twin Maiden Husks at the Roundtable Hold after giving them the Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing [2]. This Bell Bearing is inside the Sealed Tunnel, behind a hidden wall, in the Leyndell Royal Capital area. To reach the Sealed Tunnel, go down into the moat to the south to find it tucked away in the cliff. Once inside, go past the Site of Grace and hit the walls on the west side to find the hidden room.
Smithing Stone [3] can also be farmed from the miners inside the Gael Tunnel in Caelid. This tunnel is listed just below under Smithing Stone [4].
Smithing Stone [4]
Smithing Stone [4] can be found in abundance in the Gael Tunnel in Caelid. This is quite a tough area, even if you are ready for this upgrade material, so be prepared for a fight. The miners also have a chance of dropping Smithing Stone [3].
Smithing Stone [4] can be purchased from the Twin Maiden Husks after giving them the Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing [2], which was mentioned above. This Bell Bearing is located inside the Sealed Tunnel in the Leyndell Royal Capital. The tunnel is accessed via the southern moat.
Smithing Stone [5]
Smithing Stone [5] can be found in the Altus Tunnel, in the eastern side of the Altus Plateau, down in the gully where the Minor Erdtree is located.
Smithing Stone [5] can be purchased from the Twin Maiden Husks at the Roundtable Hold after giving them the Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing [3]. This Bell Bearing is found in the Zamor Ruins in the Mountaintop of the Giants. Find the chest in the basement in the southwest of the ruins.
Smithing Stone [6]
At this point, the remaining Smithing Stones in Elden Ring are more common outside of mines than in them. Instead, these are only found in one or two at a time on specific bodies in the world. The main source for Smithing Stone [6] is going to be finding them throughout Leyndell, Royal Capital and the Crumbling Farum Azula.
It is possible to farm them, but it is extremely slow going. According to some users on the Fextralife Wiki page, defeating the Leyndell Soldiers inside the Capital will yield Smithing Stone [6], however, it is a low drop chance of 4 percent, so likely not worth your time.
The best way to get Smithing Stone [6] is to purchased it from the Twin Maiden Husks at the Roundtable Hold after giving them the Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing [3]. Find the Bell Bearing in the Zamor Ruins in the Mountaintop of the Giants, inside a chest in the ruins.
To find the Bell Bearing, start at the Zamor Ruins Site of Grace and go south, using Torrent to jump over the mountain. Skirt the edge of the ruins and drop down to the stairs. The stairs lead down to the chest which contains the Bell Bearing.
Smithing Stone [6] can also drop from the miners inside the Yelough Anix Tunnel in the Consecrated Snowfield.
Smithing Stone [7]
Smithing Stone [7] can be found in the Crumbling Farum Azula. However, prior to reaching this end-game location, you might also find them in the Haligtree, Mohgwyn Palace, and in the Moonlight Altar after progressing through Ranni’s questline.
As always, the best way to get Smithing Stone [7] is to purchase them from the Twin Maiden Husks in the Roundtable Hold after giving them the Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing [4]. This Bell Bearing is the reward for defeating the Godskin Duo in the Crumbling Farum Azula, which is a boss and area you will inevitably pass through as it is required for completing the game. You will find them in the Dragon Temple Altar.
Smithing Stone [8]
Smithing Stone [8] can be found in abundance in the Crumbling Farum Azula, an end-game area in Elden Ring. Prior to this, you may also find them in the Consecrated Snowfield inside the Yelough Anix Tunnel.
To get more Smithing Stone [8], purchase them from the Twin Maiden Husks in the Roundtable Hold after giving them the Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing [4]. As mentioned above, this Bell Bearing is rewarded for defeating the Godskin Duo in the Crumbling Farum Azula.
Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone
The Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone is the final level of Smithing Stones in Elden Ring. There are only so many of these available per playthrough, as you cannot purchase them and they only drop from specific locations and as rewards for specific NPC questlines.
An Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone is found in the Consecrated Snowfield, to the east along the frozen river, right below the frozen waterfall that flows from the Mountaintops of the Giants. The closest Site of Grace is in the Cave of the Forlorn. Be careful when you approach the frozen waterfall as you will encounter Magma Wrym Theodorix who deals a whole lot of damage. The Smithing Stone is up on the ledge, use Torrent to reach it.
One Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone is found inside the Yelough Anix Tunnel in the Consecrated Snowfield.
This Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone is found in the mouth of a giant skull in the Mountaintops of the Giants near the Church of Repose. From the Site of Grace in the church, face southeast to spot the giant’s skull. Climb the rocks to reach the mouth and grab your Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.
Another Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone is found in Miquella’s Haligtree immediately after the fight against Loretta, Knight of the Haligree. As you go down the ladder after the stairs, you will see a chest on top of a tower – this contains the smithing stone. Do not enter the tower where the elevator is, instead, go past the door and up the stairs to reach the chest.
An Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone is rewarded from a few NPC quests:
- Sorceress Sellen’s questline
- Gatekeeper Gostoc’s questline
- Nepheli Loux’s questline
- Gurranq Beast Clergyman’s questline
From here on out, you should be all sorted for the various Smithing Stones in Elden Ring. Keep farming Smithing Stones and buying them from the Twin Maiden Husks as you’ll want to boost your favorite weapon to max level sooner rather than later. Plus, it’s always fun to have a few different weapons available should you want to mix it up. Stop by the Shacknews Elden Ring strategy guide for more helpful guides.
